Managing BC’s Forests: A System in Flux with UBC Professor Harry Nelson

Join us on Friday April 28th at 7pm at the Pemberton & District Public Library to listen to UCB Professor Dr Harry Nelson. Professor Nelson will be speaking on the background of Community Forest’s in BC, situating them in the current landscape of ways in which we have organized how forests are managed in the province. He’ll then move to where we are at today: a system in flux. Why is that? Changing economic conditions like cyclical markets and reduced harvest availability; social expectations like working towards reconciliation and addressing the questions surrounding Old growth; and climate change. He will focus in on the local context and create space for questions around what this means for local forest management and what opportunities or challenges might exist in the valley.

About Professor Harry Nelson:

Dr. Harry Nelson is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, currently investigating how policy has affected the way in which we manage our renewable resources in Canada with a focus on the resulting outcomes.  He also works on assessing the impacts of climate change on how we manage our forests and exploring adaptation options. Harry’s long-term research interest is in analyzing natural and environmental resource policy with an emphasis on forestry and in developing new policy options that can help enhance the long run sustainability of Canadian forests and the communities and businesses that rely upon them.

Harry has worked with and consulted extensively with the Federal government, Provincial governments, Trade and other associations, First Nations communities, and forest sector firms over a wide variety of policy issues.

This program is made possible by a partnership with Speĺkúmtn Community Forest (SCF), the Stewardship Pemberton Society (SPS) and the Pemberton & District Public Library.
