Sea-to-Sky Book Club: Gender Queer Thursdays, September 8, 15 & 22 7-8:30pm Online on Zoom All Sea-to-Sky residents are invited to a three-part discussion of the graphic novel Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe! We will meet three times, discussing different themes and questions at each meeting. Everyone is welcome to join this virtual reading group, and we will also be joined by Sea-to-Sky Allies. Please be prepared to attend all three sessions! You can borrow a copy of the book from the Squamish, Whistler, or Pemberton and District Public Libraries. We also have ebook copies available, although be aware that this is a graphic novel with lots of visual elements that may show up differently on an ereader! If you wish to purchase a copy yourself, you can mention the book club to Armchair Books in Whistler or Little Bookshop in Squamish and get 15% off. Registration is required: Email publicservices@whistlerlibrary.ca to sign up! About the Book:   "In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Then e created Gender Queer. Maia’s intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fan fiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears. Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: It is a useful and touching guide on gender identity—what it means and how to think about it—for advocates, friends, and humans everywhere."
